Campus Action

Western's commitment to achieving sustainability is demonstrated on several fronts.

  • Western is a signatory to the Council of Ontario Universities' Formal Declaration of Commitment to Environmental Sustainability.

  • Western is a signatory to the Talloires Declaration -a global action plan signed by more than 350 university presidents from 40 countries around the world.
Western has established its own formal policy on Environment and Sustainability.

  • The President's Advisory Committee on Environment & Sustainability (PACES) was formed in 2010 to set goals for Western's sustainability efforts, engage the broader campus comm unity in supporting these initiatives, and monitor progress.

  • During the summer of 2011, PACES completed an assessment of our sustainability performance using an internationally recognized tool developed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. Western achieved a Silver rating using AASHE's Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System.

Over the next 8 months PACES will be working alongside an external consultant (Sustainability Solutions Group) to develop a 10-year sustainability vision and 5-year action plan for Western.

This vision and action plan will require the input and support of our entire campus community to achieve success.

Western provides the best student experience among Canada's leading research-intensive universities.
